Frequently Asked Questions
Where is polyurethane flooring typically used?
Polyurethane flooring is widely used in food and beverage production facilities, breweries, commercial kitchens, cold stores and freezer rooms, pharmaceutical manufacturing, car showrooms, retail environments, and sports halls. Its thermal stability and hygienic properties make it particularly popular in the food industry. Some ideal use-cases for PU flooring include:
-
Commercial kitchens
Food and drink production facilities
Warehouses and factories
Cold storage and freezers
It’s ideal anywhere that demands durability, hygiene and temperature resistance.
How is polyurethane flooring different from epoxy flooring?
The main difference is flexibility and heat resistance. Polyurethane flooring can handle temperature changes and substrate movement far better than epoxy, making it the preferred choice for kitchens and food environments.
Epoxy is harder and better suited to heavy static loads, while polyurethane performs better in environments with temperature fluctuations, underfloor heating, or frequent impact. The two systems are sometimes used together, with an epoxy base and a polyurethane topcoat.
How long does polyurethane flooring last?
With proper installation and maintenance, polyurethane flooring can last 10-20 years or more, even in demanding environments. Its durability makes it a long-term investment.
It’s important to bear in mind, that the lifespan of a PU floor will largely depend on the quality of its installation, which is why we recommend using an experienced and accredited resin flooring expert.
How thick is polyurethane flooring?
Thickness typically ranges from 4mm to 9mm, depending on the system and application. Heavier-duty environments usually require thicker installations. We conduct free site surveys, where an engineer will determine the right thickness for your use-case.
How long does installation take?
Installation timescales depend on the size of the area, the system being applied, and the ambient conditions. Most polyurethane systems can receive light foot traffic within 24 hours of application. Full mechanical and chemical resistance is typically achieved within 5–7 days, after which the floor can return to full industrial use. Polyurethane concrete systems may have slightly longer cure times depending on the specific product and temperature conditions.
Where necessary, we can supply fast-curing systems to minimise downtime.
Can it be installed over existing concrete?
In some circumstances, yes, provided the existing surface is sound, well-bonded, and properly prepared. However, any loose, delaminated, or contaminated areas must be removed first. Where there is any doubt about the integrity of the existing substrate, it is safer and more cost-effective in the long run to remove it entirely before applying the new system.
Our engineers can help you decide this during their site survey.

Do I need a specialist contractor to install polyurethane flooring?
Yes, without question. Polyurethane flooring, especially polyurethane concrete, requires precise mixing ratios, controlled application conditions, and thorough knowledge of substrate assessment and preparation. The consequences of a poor installation are expensive to remedy and can result in complete floor failure.
Always engage a contractor with demonstrable experience in polyurethane flooring systems, relevant references, and a clear written specification for the proposed works.
