Overview
Wetherby Whaler, a popular fish and chip restaurant chain known for its high standards in cleanliness and presentation, required a flooring upgrade. The existing floor was an ageing painted concrete surface that no longer met the durability or hygiene standards necessary for a modern food service environment. Northern Star Flooring Ltd was contracted to deliver a robust and long-lasting food-safe flooring solution.
Challenges
- The existing painted concrete floor was deteriorated and unsuitable for the high-demand environment of a commercial kitchen and food preparation area.
- Existing coving was worn and no longer hygienic or compliant with food safety standards.
- The restaurant needed a solution that would minimise downtime while offering long-term durability and ease of maintenance.
Our Solution
We delivered a comprehensive flooring refurbishment, providing a seamless, hygienic, and heavy-duty polyurethane screed system tailored for demanding environments like commercial kitchens and food service areas.
Scope of Works:
- Surface Preparation:
- Removal of all existing coving and thorough mechanical preparation of the painted concrete substrate to ensure a strong bond with the new system.
- Screed Installation:
- Installation of KDR Polyscreed Q HF, a heavy-duty polyurethane screed specifically designed for areas subject to chemical spillages, thermal shock, and heavy traffic.
- Jointing System:
- Installed expansion joints using Poly Joint FC, ensuring the floor has adequate movement accommodation and longevity.
- Coving Application:
- Application of Polycove Q, a high-performance coving system to create a seamless floor-to-wall transition that meets hygiene standards and facilitates easy cleaning.
Outcome
The project was completed to a high standard, delivering a durable, low-maintenance flooring system with excellent resistance to abrasion, impact, and chemicals. The new floor is fully compliant with health and safety regulations and supports the day-to-day operations of a busy restaurant kitchen.
