Seamless blue resin floor in a laboratory with fitted benching

Project Overview

Northern Star Flooring Ltd was appointed for a resin flooring installation in Liverpool. The work involved the preparation and laying of a high-performance resin flooring system for laboratories at the Origin House laboratory in Liverpool. The laboratory environment required a seamless, hygienic, and durable flooring solution capable of withstanding regular cleaning regimes while maintaining a professional, modern appearance.

The Sikafloor® Multiflex PS 37 UV system was specified due to its flexibility, crack-bridging properties, and UV resistance, making it well suited for a controlled laboratory setting.

Scope of Works

The works covered a total area of approximately 600 m² and included full mechanical preparation of the substrate, followed by the installation of a multi-layer polyurethane resin flooring system with integrated coving.

Floor Preparation

To ensure optimal performance and long-term durability, comprehensive surface preparation was carried out:

  • The existing substrate was diamond ground to provide a suitable mechanical bond.
  • The surface was then thoroughly vacuumed to remove all dust and contaminants prior to resin application.

Sikafloor®-151 Primer

  • A 2-part epoxy primer (Sikafloor®-151) was mixed in line with manufacturer specifications.
  • The primer was applied to both the floor area and coving using squeegees and rollers.
  • The primer was allowed to fully cure, creating a strong bond for the subsequent layers.

BC375N Body Coat

  • A 2-part semi-elastic polyurethane self-smoothing body coat (BC375N) was mixed and applied.
  • The material was installed using trowels to a nominal thickness of 3 mm.
  • The system was flowed up the coving to form a fully seamless floor-to-wall finish, essential for hygiene control in laboratory environments.
  • A spike roller was used to remove any entrapped air and ensure a smooth, consistent finish.
  • The body coat was then left to cure fully.

TC442W UV-Resistant Topcoat

  • A 2-part, UV-resistant, water-based polyurethane sealer (TC442W) was mixed and applied.
  • The topcoat was applied using rollers, providing a uniform, protective seal.
  • The surface was allowed to cure, completing the Sikafloor® Multiflex PS 37 UV system.

Outcome

The completed flooring installation delivered:

  • A seamless and hygienic finish suitable for laboratory use
  • Integrated coving to support cleaning and contamination control
  • Excellent durability and flexibility
  • A UV-resistant finish to maintain long-term appearance

The project was completed to a high standard, meeting the operational and hygiene requirements of the Origin House laboratory and demonstrating Northern Star Flooring Ltd’s expertise in specialist resin flooring installations.
